Rottnest Express run a bike hire service accompanying their ferry business to Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, Western Australia. Bicycles are the only vehicles permitted for public use, so the island is renowned for its cycling culture. In conjunction with Rottnest Express, Flying Machine developed a completely new model to meet their specific needs. Minimal maintenance, longevity and ease of operation were the key features required for these bicycles, which are replacing 21 speed lower end mountain bikes. Flying Machine bicycles will resolve maintenance issues and increase customer satisfaction by eliminating ongoing problems with the existing fleet. The Island Cruisers are 7 speed Shimano Nexus hub geared bikes with the Gates ‘Carbon Drive’ belt system. The Carbon Drive system is particularly beneficial for Rottnest Island, where traditional chains were being replaced every four to six weeks during peak season as a result of salt exposure.
This Island Cruisers will increase profitability for the bike hire business by consuming significantly less maintenance time and increasing bicycle life-span, thus extending their replacement cycle.
