This week’s feature machines have gone to a couple who really love bikes, between them they now have a total of 12.  Below are their thoughts on the latest.

“These new bikes, our fourth and fifth from Flying Machine  are quite different from anything else in our stable. The belt drive for an urban bike has to be the way to go, single speed or fixed… sooper schmoove man…

The attention to detail, high quality components and great personal service made the whole experience fantastic.

The fun in seeing the photos of the bikes in productio and then the real deal was really great. These bikes will no doubt give us a lot of pleasure for a long time.

We’re both very happy. Trusting Matt’s creative judgement and giving Flying Machine free artistic license was well worth doing.

We love making flash machines for discerning individuals but we also believe that bicycles can and should play a major role in changing the way people and businesses operate in moving towards a more sustainable future.

QGC an Australian gas producer agrees with us and are moving to introduce bikes for use by their staff on site. The aim is to cut down vehicle use, particularly for short trips not practical to walk. This will generating savings in time, money and emissions which really makes a lot of sense.

These bikes have been designed to be tough, no nonsense and for absolute minimum maintenance. This is to ensure longevity, minimum down time as well as on-going cost savings.

‘Flat Free’  Schwabe Marrathon Tour tyres have a good tread allowing for light off road use plus puncture protection second to none.

Belt driven of course…. Single speed in a nice easy gear minimises complexity and any potential problems significantly.

  Quick release seat post for easy seat height adjustment between users.

Front basket for carrying bits and pieces was an essential request from the customer and really enhances the practicality of the machines.

This weeks featured bike is the first ‘made to order’ version of our F Series ‘Flash’ model.  The bike was produced for a guy who knew what he wanted for his 30th birthday and had a plan for how to get it.

The bike was ordered with the deposit paid,  the call was then made to all attending the celebrations that as a gift they could donate towards the new machine.

..and so the balance payment for the bike was almost entirely covered by generous friends and relatives leaving one happy birthday boy.

As with most endeavors repetition leads to refinement.  The paint job for ‘Flash’ #2 was a definite improvement on the prototype.

More subtle colour layering achieved greater depth and some beautiful shades.

A few upgrades, Gates Centretrack belt drive and White Industries front hub to go with the Alfine 8 speed gearing and standard White Industries bottom bracket really do make this machine a ‘silent killer’

A taste for minimalism and high design drove this colour scheme. The first machine we have ever done without any polished silver components so it really stands out from our other builds.

No brakes and super high pressure tyres,  this is a pure track assassin.

White Industries hubs and bottom bracket make running as smooth as silk…

This weeks machine has colours matched to a customers specific requirements.  A classic look combined with high end modern components makes for a sweet ride.

Carbon Drive ‘Centretrack’ belt system super quiet, smooth and pretty much maintenance free.

The paint job on this bike represents a step forward that we have been working on for a while.  The colours are the same mixed in house, cutting edge, waterbourne automotive paints  that we use for all of our custom machines, this is however the first bike to roll out with our new waterbourne ultra low VOC clear coat.

Traditional solvent based clear coats are extremely toxic, the new waterbourne clear that we are now using for both matte and gloss finishes gives us an entirely solvent free painting system with no compromise on finish or durability.

Solvent free is good for us, good for you and good and the environment…

This machine is built for comfort and speed with a unique matte finish colour scheme.  Gates Carbon Drive,  Shimano Alfine 8 and Schwalbe 32mm Durano tyres all combine for a super smooth yet bullet proof ride.

Versa shifters combined with drop bars and hub gearing gives you the best of both worlds, multiple hand positions for longer and potentially windy rides plus super low maintenance all round.

The client for this machine wanted something they could ride but also display hanging on the wall in their lounge room. Feeling the pressure we needed to come up with something striking.

High quality components from likes of Brooks and White Industries make this machine built for performance as well as looks.

Airbrush blue fire technique took a little time but the masking was much more complicated.

This weeks featured bike is a new model that we are very excited about.  Inspired by the rapidly growing sport sport of Cyclo-cross but with an urban/ utilitarian twist. The UCX is a bike that can take on any urban conditions without hesitation.

Cyclo-cross racing is a combination of road and off road with varying surface conditions, obstacles and unexpected features similar in many ways to taking short cuts through a busy city where you never know whats around the corner.

The UCX is put together using entirely high quality components from White Industries, Shimano, Brooks, Gates (Carbon Drive), Avid, Schwalbe and more.  The bike can be configured either as a no fuss single speed or with the super smooth Shimano Alfine 8 or 11 speed hub gears.

Columbus ‘Life’ triple butted cromolly steel frame combined with a Spot Brand carbon fork make the UCX light, strong, responsive and comfortable.

This is an extremely fun bike to ride…… The UCX will allow you to plow through pretty much anything.
